Peyronie’s disease is formation of thick plaque under penis skin. As a result, there is curvature of penis during erection. In addition, penis tension increases with sexual arousal. Most often, Peyronie’s disease occurs in men 25-60 years old (in period of greatest social activity).
Peyronie’s disease may develop due to following reasons:
Main symptom of Peyronie’s disease is curvature of penis to the side, towards scrotum or abdomen. With erection, patient feels pain in penis. Under skin of penis there is sealed area. There is deterioration of erection: penis isn`t sufficiently hardened and increases in size. Due to curvature of penis is its functional shortening.
Diagnosis of Peyronie’s disease is reduced to following measures:
There are acute and chronic forms of Peyronie’s disease. In acute form, penis plaque area is actively supplying blood. In this form, surgical treatment is contraindicated. In chronic form, blood supply in area of penile plaque is impaired, which leads to gradual formation of scar. Depending on degree of curvature, Peyronie’s disease 1, 2 and 3 categories are distinguished. In Peyronie’s disease of first category, penis is bent by less than 30 degrees, with 2 categories – from 30 to 60 degrees, with 3 categorie – curvature of more than 60 degrees.
If there is pain during erection, as well as change in shape of penis, it`s necessary to consult urologist or andrologist.
The most effective treatment for Peyronie’s disease is surgical. Operation is to remove plaque or create crease on side of the penis opposite plaque, due to which it is aligned.
Drug treatment of Peyronie’s disease is possible only in early stages, as well as in acute period, when surgery is contraindicated. From medications prescribed vitamin E, drugs that reduce activity of fibroblasts, cytostatics, drugs that inhibit formation of collagen, anti-inflammatory drugs, immunomodulatory drugs and other drugs.
Local therapy of Peyronie’s disease consists in introduction of special drugs in area of plaque, which contribute to its reduction. In case of Peyronie’s disease, method of distant lithotripsy is also practiced – softening of compacted plaque by means of shock wave generator.
